Stepping into a “Global Citizen Island”
Our life and work is full of dialogue opportunities. Sometimes particular planning and design is needed help a group enter into “dialogue,”.but most of the time, with our sense of awareness, equality, curiosity, empathy, willingness to listen and explore, we can turn an ordinary conversation into a profound dialogue. This first dialogue newsletter of 2012 is written by Jackie Chang, Director at the CP Yen Foundation, about her experience at an unprecedented dialogue event held on December 18th.
To encourage 20-29 year olds to travel the world independently, the Global Citizen Culture Association organized a “Global Citizen Island” event. The purpose is to support youth’s independence, open their eyes to the world, and share their learnings about back in Taiwan – making Taiwan not only the world’s science island but through the footprints of these young travelers into a “Global Citizen Island”. The call for applications was publicized last September and within two months 2,203 young travelers applied. During this process 267 Global Guides contributed their time, experience and expertise to help these youth pursue their dream.
The initial selection period allowed only 1,000 applicants to attend the December 18th dialogue event; and from that day 20 travelers would advance to the next stage of online voting where ultimately 10 applicants would be elected to receive $150,000 Taiwan dollars to realize their travel plan.
George Yen, Chairman of the CP Yen Foundation and I fortunately received an invitation from the event sponsor to serve as Guides. Read all 1,000 travel plans in such a short time would have been impossible; so the sponsor convened a World Cafe-like process where each Guide served as a table host, and each youth traveler visited six tables over six rounds of dialogue.
The Guides evaluated each travel plan based on originality, social concern, completeness, and the individual’s independence and communication abilities. The young travelers spoke about their dream again and again at each table and benefitted from building relationships with other travelers, learning from one another how to express oneself, focus and listen to one another; their travel plans adopted new attributes from each other’s views and dreams – the learning goals of the Global Citizen dialogue was reflected in this very process!
I’m extremely happy to have participated in this large scale dialogue event, to see the spirit of world cafe played out so vividly and to be a wheel in the advancement of a “Global Citizen Island.”
