Competition and Collaborations in Board Games – the Power of Dialogue at Work

By Vincent Chen, Board director, CP Yen Foundation

During the last year or so, I’ve been using board games for my facilitation activities in a surprising number of occasions, first in board games I designed, next a theme-based game introduced by the CP Yen Foundation to facilitate cross-generational dialogues, and then the larger-scale SDGs Game introduced by CP Yen Foundation earlier this year to promote social sustainability.

My earliest encounter with board games was Monopoly. Then came the game of Mahjong. Recently I started to play more  board games from Europe. In these games, players are confined in cycles of competitions throughout until they lose. Under the rules of the games, all players have to be alert constantly, thinking about how to break through or create their advantages. The competition and the mind-playing dynamic remains throughout the games.

Dialogues stimulate more learning

The process of the Leadership game is more than learning the knowledge and concepts. Simulation activities speed up the learning process and lead the players into deeper dialogues. These dialogues help players to better share and clarify the issues and bring the group into a collaborative space. Through dialoguing, players learn to value diverse viewpoints and wisdom.

Dialogues transcend cross-generational values

On 2018 CP Yen Foundation held a “X TAQUN” Dialogue Day Workshop in which multi-generational players spoke out for their values through board games. After the diverse dialogues, players became more aware of the roles and meanings behind different perspectives, as well as the need to feel included and respected.

Dialogues open up a different world

As we enter the world of World Wide Web, the speed and wealth of information make the world seem like a smaller place (in distance). We also feel the world is rapidly changing. In response to all the changes, the United Nation calls upon all nations to adopt the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The agenda include 18 goals that are integrated and indivisible and balance the three dimensions of sustainable development: the economic, social and environmental.

What will the world be like in 2030? CP Yen Foundation has introduced the 2030 SDGs Game – a card-based game designed in Japan – to the audience in Taiwan so the players can experience a world without clear boundaries, a world that is intertwined together, one in which everyone influences one another. Through facilitation, players dialogue among themselves in the competitions. They come to see the impact they make on the system when they achieve their individual goals. In the dialogues, players come close to the world they co-create. They become aware of the balance of the elements. At this point, the atmosphere changes from competitiveness to one of support, connection and collaboration.

The game sets the context. Dialogues bring us closer together.
